Sleep Apnea Screening Test
TEMPORARILY UNAVAILABLE
NO REFERRAL REQUIRED. Take-Home Sleep Apnea Screening Tests are small and portable devices worn overnight. They provide a cheaper and easier-to-use alternative to Sleep Studies when screening for the presence of sleep apnea. Using ResMed’sApneaLink™, we are able to record up to five channels of information: respiratory effort, pulse, oxygen saturation, nasal flow and snoring.
These studies are reported on by an Experienced Physiotherapist and results will be available within a week of performing the overnight test. While research show a high correlation between sleep apnea screening tests and full sleep studies, the results may not be definitive and further assessment and/or testing may be recommended. Alternatively in some cases immediate treatment might be appropriate. Your preference in regards to ongoing assessment and management is important to us.
How do I book a Take-Home Sleep Apnea Screening Test?
Contact the clinic directly on 02 6282 1723 to discuss options.
What if Sleep Apnea is detected on my sleep study or screening test?
After your home-based sleep apnea screening test your results and report may recommend a consultation (with a Physiotherapist or Sleep Physician), further investigations or in some cases prompt treatment. In addition, our staff will contact you if we think urgent follow-up is required with one of our physiotherapists to discuss your results.
Alternatively, if you have performed a sleep study at another sleep clinic we are still happy to discuss your results or possible treatments with you. If you don’t already have a copy of your sleep study results to bring along to your consultation, let us know which clinic you attended so that we may request them on your behalf.
Treatment options if significant sleep apnea is found will vary based on a number of factors including the severity of the condition, your symptoms, your level of general health and body shape. Your specific situation is likely to need to be discussed with a healthcare professional such as one of our physiotherapist or your doctor, but options may include:
- Weight loss
- Sleeping on your side (e.g Nightshift, or a repositionary device)
- Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP)
- Mandibular advancement splint (jaw advancing splint)
- Upper airway surgery
- Provent therapy
- No treatment or long term monitoring
Pensioners and Private Health Insurance holders should note that the Take-Home Sleep Apnea Screening Tests are not adequate to justify a rebate/funding for a continuous positive airways pressure (CPAP) device. You may also require a portable sleep study before an application or rebate can be processed. Please contact us on 02 6282 1723 or reception@sleepandlifestyle.com.au if you have any queries concerning the suitability of a screening sleep study in your case.
